Red Cliff ~The Mighty River Flows East~

lyrics: francis li
music: iwashiro taro

Watch, the mighty river flows east
Its spray immersing even ancient heroes
Laugh, pointing at rivers and mountains of the territory
Right and wrong, success and failure, all fly up in ashes and smoke
On this land we part
Yet the green mountains endure, the rain has just stopped
To whom should I express my valiant passions?

Opportunity is hard to come by, so we'll temporarily borrow the east wind*
As water the years flow by, the footprints of life seldom overlapping
The red cliff is barely discernible in this place where winds flow and clouds run
Only the glowing moon from that time remains
Untold seas and skies all squandered, old friends have never appeared in dreams
How many times has the setting sun appeared red? The midnight toll sounds

#All things long divided must unite, all things long united must divide
Dwelling only fleetingly between heaven and earth, enemies and friends are hard to know
They must laugh at my many loves and my untimely white hairs
But for you I have ever since brooded in solitude
Yu and Liang born in one age**, a kettle of wine, eons sink into disappearance
It is human nature that all things long divided must unite, all things long united must divide
Our eventual parting is inevitable#
Autumn moons, spring wind, remnants of snow

Untold seas and skies all squandered, old friends have never appeared in dreams
How many times has the setting sun appeared red? The midnight toll sounds

repeat #

All things long divided must unite, all things long united must divide
Dwelling only fleetingly between heaven and earth, hosts and guests are hard to know
They must laugh at my many loves and my untimely white hairs
But for you I have ever since brooded in solitude
Yu and Liang born in one age, a kettle of wine, a lifetime in armor
It is human nature that all things long divided must unite, all things long united must divide
Though parting is destined in life
Even the farthest corners of the earth remain under the same moon

*In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhu Ge Liang and Zhou Yu's 50,000 troops were in a battle with Cao Cao's 800,000. Severely outnumbered, they made use of the east wind to spread fire to Cao Cao's ships, thus destroying all his troops.

**Yu and Liang refer to Zhou Yu and Zhu Ge Liang, two important figures of the age who were skilled in many areas. However, Zhu Ge Liang frequently bested Zhou Yu. When he died Yu cried, "Since Zhou Yu has already born, why also Zhu Ge Liang?", meaning, if there is already one of such talent, what is the need for another?
